A nerve cell communicates by releasing chemical messengers at specialized junctions.
02Synapse
At the neuromuscular junction, vesicles inside the nerve terminal release neurotransmitter across the cleft.
03Neurotoxin
A botulinum neurotoxin binds with high specificity to the surface of the nerve terminal.
04Cellular uptake
The neurotoxin is internalized into the neuron, where it acts on the vesicle-release machinery.
05Biological effect
Neurotransmitter release is modulated, changing the signal between nerve and muscle. Signaling recovers over time — a profile that differs between neurotoxins.
